Indian music shows me that there's so much to explore: YOUNGJAE
India, Aug. 2 -- After over a decade in the K-pop industry, singer-songwriter YOUNGJAE understands the importance of taking a pause. And his latest album Fermata is a reflection of that mindset. "It's a moment of rest. I believe pausing briefly helps you go farther in the long run," he tells us.
He adds, "It's a message to those barely hanging on, telling them, and myself, it's okay to run if it takes you where you truly want to be."
Since debuting in 2013, YOUNGJAE has grown significantly, both as the main vocalist of boy group GOT7 and as a solo artiste. But the 28-year-old says he's aiming higher: "I'm still refining my voice. I want to continue evolving and offer more beautiful vocals."
While GOT7 has a dedicated fanbase in India, YOUNGJAE is surprised to hear about the growing popularity of his solo work and songwriting alter ego Ars in the country. "I can hardly believe it!" he laughs. "If that's true, I'd love to visit and perform. I'd want to create a show where I can have fun with Ahgase (GOT7's fan base) there."
While he hasn't yet collaborated with Indian artistes, he's open to the idea. "I discover Indian music on global charts sometimes. It shows me how much there is still to explore. If someone calls, I'll be there," the singer notes.
GOT7 returned from a three-year hiatus in January this year. In the meantime, YOUNGJAE has had a busy run. He dropped his second album Sugar (2022) shortly after the group took a break and followed it up with his first full-length album Do It a year later. Ask about balancing solo and group work and he says he's developed a creative process that is both intuitive and flexible. "GOT7 songs need rap parts and have a more energetic feel. With solo work, I can focus entirely on my own voice and message. Each song, whether it's an OST [for a television show] or a group performance, demands a different approach. But the core always stays true to who I am."
More importantly, he sees no need to separate his solo identity from his group persona: "Both are still me."
Looking back on his creative journey, he muses that his self-awareness has been his biggest influence. "I've grown by looking at myself during the times I struggled and the times I succeeded. I became who I am today by refining and shaping those versions of myself."
Ask YOUNGJAE to sum himself up in one word and pat comes the reply: "Ars. It reflects both my name and artistic direction. It reminds me to keep creating without losing myself."...
