India, April 5 -- When it comes to everyday lip care, lip balms and lip tints are among the most popular choices, but they are often confused with each other. While they may look similar, they serve very different purposes. Lip balm is primarily a skincare product designed to moisturise and protect the lips. Most formulas contain ingredients such as beeswax, shea butter, coconut oil or petroleum jelly that help lock in moisture, and many also include SPF. While some balms may have a slight tint, their core function is hydration. Lip tints, on the other hand, are cosmetic products, usually available in liquid or gel form, that add a natural wash of colour to the lips. They create a long-lasting stain without the heaviness of traditional lipsticks, making them ideal for a subtle, 'no-makeup' look. Both can be part of your daily routine, one for care, the other for colour. Lip tints generally last longer, while lip balms focus on nourishment. "The lip tints act as a colourant, often containing alcohol to sink into the lips. Lip balms are moisturisers made of oils, waxes or butter," says dermatologist Dr Shilpa Patil. The choice ultimately depends on your needs. If your lips are dry and need care, a lip balm is the better option.
