Hollywood film postpones release due to Dhurandhar, directors react
India, March 25 -- Despite a strong $140M (around Rs.130 crore) global opening, Project Hail Mary, starring Ryan Gosling, is yet to release in India. The film has re-scheduled its March 20 release to March 26 in the country, reportedly to avoid a clash with Dhurandhar The Revenge.
Just a couple of decades ago, Indian films would have moved the release to accommodate a big Hollywood film. Now, it's the other way around. Reacting to the shift, director Phil Lord laughs, "How dare you have your own successful film industry?"
And acknowledging the growing soft power of Indian cinema, he says, "I don't need to tell you that often, when you look at the top 10 films in the United States, there would be a Bollywood film. Those movies play in American theatres. Most Americans go 'what's that', but there is a big audience for it."
His directorial partner Christopher Miller adds, "And it's growing every year. Indian films in America have begun to gain broad cultural relevance, starting with RRR."...
