Understanding the difference between a benign headache and a malignant one is essential for proper diagnosis and effective management. Of all the headaches, migraine is the most common. Approximately 25% have a migraine at any point in time. But there are few features that separate different types of headaches.
A typical headache, such as a tension headache, often feels like a steady pressure or tight band around the head. It may be caused by stress, dehydration, poor posture, or lack of sleep. These headaches are usually mild to moderate in intensity and often improve with rest, hydration, or basic pain relievers.
Migraines, however, are more than just these commonplace headaches. They are a complex neurological condition. A migraine attack is usually marked by a throbbing or pulsating pain on one side of the head and may be accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and extreme sensitivity to light, sound, or smells. Some people also experience an "aura" before the headache begins - this may include visual disturbances like flashing lights or blind spots, as well as difficulty speaking or numbness in parts of the body.
Migraine attacks can last anywhere from a few hours to several days and often interfere with daily life. Triggers vary from person to person but may include specific foods, stress, hormonal shifts, changes in sleep patterns, or even weather changes. If headaches are becoming frequent, severe, or disabling, it's important to consult a neurologist. A timely evaluation can help identify whether you're dealing with migraines or another underlying condition - and guide you to the right treatment plan.
