Guru Randhawa breaks silence on Azul row
India, Aug. 31 -- Singer Guru Randhawa rang in his 34th birthday yesterday amid a storm over his latest music video, Azul, which is facing backlash for allegedly sexualising schoolgirls and romanticising paedophilia.
Despite the criticism, Guru chose to highlight the song's traction online. He shared a screenshot on Stories showing Azul trending with 1.07 lakh views in an hour and over 27,000 searches on YouTube. "Azul is Azuling. When God is with you, you only move forward," he wrote. In another post, he added in Punjabi: "When I tried making everyone happy, I was sad. Today, when I am happy, everyone else is sad."
In the video, the singer plays a school photographer, visibly captivated by actor Anshika Pandey, dressed in uniform and performing a dance sequence. The lyrics also compare schoolgirls with alcohol brands.
Guru, who wrote and composed the track with Gurjit Gill, has not directly addressed the controversy but has restricted comments on his posts.
Meanwhile, his song Sirra landed in legal trouble. A Ludhiana court summoned Guru on a complaint that its lyrics glorify drugs and defame the Jatt community. The lines "Oh jatta de aa kaake balliye/ Jammeya nu gurti ch mili afeem hai" translate to "We are the sons of Jatts. We got opium as our first food when we were born."
