India, Sept. 30 -- Gurdeep is the new Mehndi on the block with his recently released romantic single, Sajri. However, it's a pivot from the energetic dance songs his father, singer Daler Mehndi, and uncle, singer Mika Singh, are known for. Regardless of the genre he has chosen for himself, comparisons with his father and uncle are inevitable, but the 36-year-old does not shy away from his family's legacy. He tells us, "When people find out he's (Daler) my father, they want me to sing his songs. I take it in a positive way, as all his songs are iconic." He adds, "At the same time, I'm creating my own mark and am doing things differently." Talking about the dominance of Punjabi music in Bollywood, Gurdeep says, "Every movie almost always has a Punjabi song nowadays. I feel Bollywood is good at picking the right song at the right time for the right situation." According to him, Punjabi dance songs are favoured because they help films stand out and are also largely used as a film's promotional track: "That is the reason why we have more of the hardcore Punjabi dance numbers, compared to softer or romantic music in the Hindi film industry," he adds....
