India, May 31 -- Every year, May 31 is observed as World No Tobacco Day to spread awareness about the health hazards of tobacco use, advocate for effective policies to reduce its consumption, and expose the misleading tactics of the tobacco and nicotine industry. The theme for 2025 - "Unmasking the Appeal: Exposing the Industry Tactics on Tobacco & Nicotine Products" - urges us to understand how the industry glamourises harmful products to target younger audiences. While it's common to blame authorities, it's equally important for us, as responsible citizens, to act. There have been multiple awareness campaigns by various NGOs where an oral cancer survivor and their family shared their emotional journey with different sections of society-schools, residential colonies, reform homes, and gram panchayats. These stories leave a lasting impact and bring the issue closer to home. We must also utilise social media to reveal how the industry manipulates product appearances, uses flavour additives, and adopts deceptive marketing strategies to attract the youth. Collaborating with social media influencers can amplify these messages. Schools and colleges should conduct poster-making competitions, street plays, and anti-tobacco skits to sensitise students. Institutions could even appoint a 'Tobacco Monitor' to help promote awareness regularly. It is vital to support smoke-free laws that ban hookahs, e-cigarettes, and other emerging tobacco products. We should demand policies that ban flavouring agents and additives in tobacco to reduce its attractiveness. There must be a complete prohibition on indirect promotions, celebrity endorsements, and event sponsorships by tobacco companies. Reducing tobacco supply begins with decreasing demand. This can be achieved through regular mass media campaigns, empowering youth with accurate information, and ensuring easy access to quitting resources and medications. To conclude, even small actions - like attending local or virtual awareness events in May - can help. Together, we can build a tobacco-free culture and protect future generations from its devastating impact....
