Ethan Hawke recalls tabloid coverage of divorce from Uma Thurman: It was humiliating
India, Sept. 3 -- Over 20 years after their public split, actor Ethan Hawke made a rare comment on his seven-year-long marriage actor Umar Thurman.
Reflecting on the reportage of his breakup with Uma (55) at the time, Ethan (54) told GQ Hype, "It's humiliating. It's almost humiliating even when they're saying positive things."
The former couple had met in 1997 during the filming of director Andrew Niccol's sci-fi thriller flick Gattaca. They fell in love and got married in 1998, and went on to welcome two children, actors Maya Hawke (27) and Levon Hawke (23).
Ethan and Uma separated in 2003 amid reports that he was unfaithful. Though he denied the rumours at the time, Ethan began publicly his children's nanny dating Ryan Shawhughes after his divorce with Uma was finalised in 2005.
When asked about why actors fall in love with co-stars so frequently, Ethan said, "There's a certain intimacy to the work that we do. Imaginative intimacy. It's such a high. It feels dangerous and thrilling. It turns the temperature up in your life. It can be like falling in love at summer camp. It doesn't have any connection to the dailiness of real life. That's the danger of it."
Ethan married Ryan in 2008. The couple welcomed two children together, Clementine Jane Hawke (17) and Indiana Hawke (14).
