India, Oct. 28 -- A Delhi University student was attacked with acid on Sunday, by a man and two accomplices, while on her way to class near Lakshmibai College in Ashok Vihar. Having suffered burns on her hands, the 20-year-old was expected to be discharged from the hospital on Monday, but meanwhile it has left many female students shaken. On Sunday night, Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) president Aryan Maan went to meet the student and said, "She said three men came on a bike, took out a bottle of acid and tried to throw it at her. She tried to save herself by picking up her bag, but the acid hit both her hands, which led her to suffer 5% burns." However, on Monday, the wife of the accused (Jitender) laid charges of rape and abuse on the student's father. In a reply to this incident, Aryan told HTCity, "We do not have the facts in hand at this point. But regardless of anything, an acid attack can never be the answer to anything, as it is as heinous a crime as any! We, at DUSU, have raised our concerns and are demanding certain measures to be brought into place. These include functional pink booths outside all girls' colleges. There should be more CCTV cameras; the police must make students aware of the helpline numbers, and resources should be available in case they need to reach out to someone complaining about stalking. Just last month, we installed street lights in dark spots around the campus. But it's very crucial for us to think of more such measures for the safety of women."...
