India, Nov. 16 -- Diabetes mellitus is increasing at an alarming rate in India, affecting millions of people across all age groups. One of the most concerning trends is that individuals are developing diabetes at a much younger age than before. This early onset increases the risk of long-term complications and impacts the nation's health productivity. Diabetes is classified according to the aetiologies under 10 broad types, which have further subtypes. Some of which include T1D, T2D, MODY, pancreatogenous diabetes, diabetes associated with endocrinopathies (Cushing's disease, acromegaly, hyperthyroidism, etc.), drug-induced diabetes (especially steroids and thiazides), diabetes in various syndromes like lipodystrophy syndromes, etc. Several factors contribute to this rapid rise: An abnormal blood glucose profile and elevated HbA1c levels usually confirm the diagnosis of diabetes. However, to determine the exact type, more specialised blood and radiological tests may be required. The management of diabetes has evolved beyond simple blood sugar control.
