Denzel Washington lashes out at handsy pap on Cannes Film Festival red carpet
India, May 21 -- It was an eventful Monday night for Denzel Washington. The actor was attending the Cannes Film Festival - only his second since 1993 - ahead of the premier of his latest film, Highest 2 Lowest, when an incident with a handsy photographer on the red carpet briefly threatened to cast a shadow over the day.
Videos from the festival show the 70-year-old speaking to director Spike Lee and co-star, rapper A$AP Rocky when a photographer attempted to grab the actor to get his attention. This seemed to set off the actor, who walked up to the shutterbug and appeared to reprimand him.
Clips show the man seeming to laugh off the actor's concerns and grabbing the Oscar winner's arm as he turned to leave. "Stop it, stop it, stop it," Denzel could be heard saying as he flung the man's hand off his arm and walked away. "Don't put your hands on me again," he can be heard telling the lensman.
Despite the tense exchange outside, Denzel was surprised with an honorary Palme d'Or to celebrate his career and many contributions to cinema. "Denzel, because you are here, we want to make something special for you," festival director Thierry Fremaux said right before the screening of Highest 2 Lowest.
"This is a total surprise for me, so I'm emotional," the actor said after director Spike Lee presented him with the award.
Cannes usually gives out one or two honorary Palmes each edition - last year's awardees were Studio Ghibli and director George Lucas. Last week, actor Robert De Niro received one on the festival's opening night.htc...
