Delhi turns Italian for a day
India, May 30 -- Even the Capital's sultry weather couldn't dampen the spirits of dignitaries who gathered for the Italian Republic Day reception at the sprawling lawns of Ambassador Antonio Bartoli's residence.
Paper fans in shades of Italy's flag were provided upon arrival, helping guests stay cool as they mingled. The festive atmosphere was made livelier as the Indian Air Force Band performed some jugalbandi tunes.
The spread was a true Italian affair, with dishes such as baked lasagne, tiramisu and wild mushroom risotto.
On the occasion, Ambassador Bartoli remarked, "This is an opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to the values of democracy." Mentioning India's resilience in the face of terror, he added, "Italy is dedicated to peace and dialogue among nations, which is what the world needs most in these troubled times. The band of the Indian Air Force just played our national anthems; this underscores our deep respect for the Indian Armed Forces. We stand in strong rejection of any form of terrorism."...
