Chhedi Singh is why the film was a hit: Sonu on 15 years of Dabangg
India, Sept. 10 -- As Dabangg marks its 15th anniversary today, actor Sonu Sood reflects on what he calls a "turning point" in his career. "When it released, everyone called me to say this was one of my most powerful roles. The film was a huge hit; people loved [my character] Chhedi Singh. It will always be one of my most special films," he says.
The actor, who played the film's antagonist, reveals that the Chhedi Singh that audiences love wasn't how the character was originally written. "He was a hard-core angry man. But I felt he needed a witty angle," Sonu tells us, adding, "Abhinav (Kashyap, director) was open to experimenting. A lot of Chhedi came from my Bihari college friends - their body language, their love for (films). Even the famous 'Bhaiya ji, smile' line was inspired by them."
The 52-year-old goes on to say the face-off between Chhedi and Chulbul Pandey (Salman Khan) will always be one of the film's highlights for him. "I actually broke my nose while rehearsing with a stunt guy! There was no doctor nearby, so I shot in pain. But it was worth it - people loved the action," he reveals.
Why does he think the film had the impact that it did upon release? "A film works when every character stays with you, not just the hero. Chhedi Singh was remembered, and that's why the film became a hit. You can't rely on the name, you have to make a great film," the actor asserts.
Chhedi continues to be a part of the actor's life, even as his on-screen image has changed. "Those iconic lines have stayed with people. At every event I go to, people still say them to me. But in real life, the work I've been doing has shifted my image. I don't get negative roles anymore - only positive ones. And that's been the biggest change," he ends....
