Broker tells man his Rs.45,000 budget is too low for south Delhi; chat goes viral
India, Aug. 20 -- T
he soaring rental rates of south Delhi sparked debate online after a broker bluntly dismissed a man's housing budget of Rs.45,000, telling him it was "too low" for the area.
The viral exchange, shared on Reddit by user @RichBadPoorDad, revealed how a 2BHK in Defence Colony was quoted at Rs.80,000 a month - nearly double the man's budget. The broker described the flat as a fully renovated, furnished home in a "VIP posh area," with two months' deposit and brokerage fees.
When the man explained his Rs.45,000 budget, the broker curtly responded, "Oh, so sorry, you won't get any good 2BHK in any South Delhi areas. Rents are very, very high there." He suggested alternatives such as Lajpat Nagar or Kalkaji but added he did not deal in "low-budget" properties.
The Redditor, who said he worked his way up from a modest background to his current corporate role, reflected on the belittling tone. "This would be my first time in Delhi, and the broker's response left me feeling small, even though what he said is a fact," he wrote.
The post triggered strong reactions online, with many users slamming the broker's arrogance. "Brokers tend to talk like this to create an aura of exclusivity," one commented. Another added, "Don't let this affect you. He said it on purpose to make you feel small."
The debate also highlighted Delhi's skyrocketing rents. Reports show that Capital rentals have jumped 36.8% in the past year, making Delhi the second-most expensive city after Mumbai. Affordable alternatives remain in areas like Dwarka Mor and Laxmi Nagar (Rs.13,700 - Rs.16,100 for 2BHKs) or Chhatarpur in south Delhi (Rs.20,500 on average). HTC...
