Asha Narwal remembers her son Lt Vinay
India, May 11 -- A
sha Narwal's world was shattered on April 22 when her son, Lt Vinay Narwal, an officer in the Indian Navy, was killed by terrorists in Pahalgam, Kashmir, just days after his wedding. Asha, still grappling with the weight of this loss, says, "Vinay ki saari yaadein dil ke qareeb hain. Har cheez mein woh mujhe yaad aata hai."
From a young age, Vinay had dreamt of joining the Navy. "Woh kehta tha, 'Mujhe Navy mein hi jaana hai'," recalls Asha, adding that the family felt immense pride when he passed the rigorous selection process. "Kabhi kabhi kehta tha ki 'mummy, main bhi kisi din tirange mein lipat kar aaunga'. I used to get very angry. But then he would say that when that day comes, you will remember I used to say this. He was always passionate about serving the nation." Asha remembers their last conversation on the evening of April 21: "The last time I spoke to him was around 8.30-9pm. We were returning to Karnal, and I called him. He told me they were heading to their hotel after dinner. I said, 'Hotel hi jaana, idhar udhar matt jaana.'"
Vinay and his wife, Himanshi, were supposed to return from Kashmir on April 26. They had just begun their honeymoon. Asha says that she had plans to celebrate Vinay's birthday on May 1: "Maine usse kaha tha ki tere birthday ke din Himanshi ki pehli rasoi karwa dungi. Humare ghar itni khushiyaan thi ki sameti hi nahin jaa rahi thi. Aur phir ekdum saari duniya hi palat gayi."...
