India, July 1 -- The recent collab between singers Ed Sheeran and Arijit Singh on Sapphire became an instant hit, with praise being showered on Ed's attempt at Hindi lyrics. While he is happy about the effort, singer Armaan Malik feels when the reverse happens, we become judgemental. "The Indian audience feels that Indian artistes don't sing English well. However, there are so many of us who sing English beautifully, sometimes even better than some English artistes," says the 29-year-old. Armaan, who recently released a single Baari Baari, adds, "We have this feeling in India where we think of our own people lesser. Our biggest drawback is that our Indian audiences love to bring our own people down." However, the singer feels it's a great time to be a musician in India, with so many global collabs being lauded. "I did it at a time when no one else was doing it. In 2020, when the pandemic hit, I released my debut English single Control, which was the starting point for people viewing an Indian singer differently," he says. Armaan says it took him a while to venture into English music as he didn't have anyone to look up to: "When I was 14, my dad (musician Daboo Malik) said, 'Focus on Bollywood, build yourself as an artiste, become big and then do it'. That was the greatest advice I ever got."...
