India, May 4 -- Though actor Anjali Anand has had back-to-back successes with her recent web series Raat Jawaan Hai (2024) and Dabba Cartel, she admits that getting good roles has been a struggle. "Everybody has a different struggle, but obviously, with my body, it's a little bit harder," she tells us. While she does feel like society creates a perception about certain body types, the actor asserts, "I don't feel like a bechari." The 33-year-old's early days in the industry were coloured by the same perception. "People put this cloud in front of me that I am overweight. I came here to act, and people forgot that. And I had to prove myself again and again to remind them. After I did (TV show) Dhhai Kilo Prem (2017), people said that it was the only lead character I would ever get, unless I lost weight. I was told to go underground for six months and come out thin. But in three months, I came back as a leading lady on the same channel." However, she doesn't believe that the same trajectory will be seen on the silver screen. "I know in movies, makers are not ready to cast me as a lead yet. I'm accepting that reality. Abhi tak, makers are not ready to see me on a poster or dancing to songs," she reflects. However, she adds: "They're not ready yet, but I will make them ready. We need more people like Shibani Dandekar (Dabba Cartel producer) and Sumeet Vyas (Raat Jawaan Hai director) who will cast someone based on what they can do with a character." Anjali insists that the West is ahead of the Indian industry in this regard, since Hollywood has learnt to look beyond the size of an actor. "Adam Sandler is the biggest example. They call him egg-shaped, but he is wearing T-shirts and shorts, and doing everything. Har type ke log hote hain, and wahaan accept kar liya hai yeh. They don't have a problem there, but here they do," she shares....
