n the wake of the recent racial violence against Angel Chakma, a 24-year-old student from Tripura who succumbed on December 25 to a stab injury in Dehradun after objecting to racial slurs hurled at him, grief and anger have hung heavy across the nation. Amid this collective sorrow, an inspiring two-year-old video by 1993-batch IPS officer Robin Hibu has resurfaced and gone viral.
In the video, Robin, dressed in his uniform, is recalling how people would say, "Tum Hindustani jaisa dikhta nahi hai", and how he would respond: "Aap humare Hindustan ko nahi jante".
Reflecting on the video's renewed attention, the 57-year-old says that talking to students about the nation's unity is a cause deeply rooted in his heart. "It breaks our hearts to see incidents like the one in Dehradun but I remain hopeful that if we can create awareness, we will be able to eliminate such unfortunate occurrences, as there will be more aware citizens who would intervene," he says.
Despite serving the nation for decades, Robin, who hails from the Apatani tribe in Arunachal Pradesh, says he has often faced casual discrimination. "When I was studying in Delhi, I used to be treated like an outsider. Even today, when I am not in my uniform, people tell me that I do not look Indian," he says. Rather than taking these experiences personally, Robin chooses to turn them into teaching moments. "I always carry a map of India with me and show it proudly to anyone who questions my identity. I tell them that our nation is so diverse," he ends....
