A sweet homecoming for long-time fans of this dystopic series
India, May 17 -- Tahereh Mafi has been one of the most prominent dystopian young adult writers ever since she wrote the best-selling, heart-throbbing Shatter Me series, which followed the lives of a few X-Men-like characters trying to make the world a better place. More than the plot, it was the thrilling romance between Juliette and the two men who couldn't keep their eyes off her, especially during life-or-death moments, that really pulled readers in. Her purple prose was a first for a lot of young readers just stepping into this kind of reading.
Mafi's newest book, Watch Me, follows a very Juliette-like character - she's desperate to escape her current life, and when she meets James from the Anti-Establishment, everything changes. On an island where constant surveillance is the norm and where every consciousness has been uploaded onto the Nexus, it's thrilling to see how these two underdogs become the heroes of their own story.
The characters seem conjured straight from a teenager's dystopian fantasy and there's enough plot movement to keep you turning pages. The romantic tension remains a core driver as Mafi continues to weave her recurring themes of anti-establishment resistance with just enough swoony moments to satisfy longtime fans.
That said, Watch Me doesn't stray far from the blueprint. The message is familiar, the character types recognisable, and the twists echo past works. It's not groundbreaking, but maybe that's the point. For fans of the original series, it's a sweet kind of deja vu - a story where everything feels the same, just slightly reshaped.
