India, Aug. 14 -- Singer Mohit Chauhan has opposed the Supreme Court's order to remove all street dogs in the Delhi-NCR region and place them in shelters within eight weeks, calling it "impractical and inhumane". Mohit, who runs an animal shelter since 2019 in Greater Kailash, New Delhi and helps care for over 400 strays, says, "We work with a place near our home on sterilisation and feeding. We visit [government-run] veterinary facilities and often there are no doctors. If you push dogs into shelters, who will give them food, water and basic care?" The 59-year-old adds, "I'm shocked. Even PM Narendra Modi encourages people to care for animals. This is an inhumane decision. It'll create an ugly situation, causing distress for animals." Mohit blames civic authorities, noting, "If municipal committees had done their job, the population wouldn't have skyrocketed. This is a human-created problem. More than three lakh dogs in eight weeks? That's too much. You'd require a minimum of 10,000 shelters, with land, staff, vets... and who will monitor them?" He also warned of unintended consequences: "Dogs act as guards. Remove them and you risk more rodents and anti-social elements."...
