India, Sept. 15 -- A fter nearly two decades of back-to-back blockbusters, Aamir Khan hit a rough patch with Thugs of Hindostan (2018) and Laal Singh Chaddha (2022). The actor recently reflected on what went wrong, conceding that overconfidence and ballooning budgets played a major role. "I became a little overconfident with Laal Singh Chaddha because I had delivered too many back-to-back hits. That is where I went wrong," Aamir admitted in a candid chat with Komal Nahta on his YouTube show. From Lagaan (2001) to Secret Superstar (2017), Aamir's record was nearly untouchable, with films such as Ghajini (2008), 3 Idiots (2009), PK (2014) and Dangal (2016) rewriting box-office history. But Thugs... ended that golden run, and the 2022 remake of Forrest Gump (1994), the Tom Hanks classic that won six Oscars including Best Picture and Best Actor, only deepened the slump. The actor explained that he usually evaluates every project through an "economic filter," ensuring that while a film need not shatter records, it should at least avoid losses. That discipline, he admitted, was abandoned with his last release. "When you know your film will earn you Rs.120 crore, you can keep your budget up to Rs.80 crore, maximum. Ideally, it should have been Rs.50-60 crore. However, we ended up spending Rs.200 crore," he said, revealing that he continued paying his team through the Covid-19 lockdowns, a call he doesn't regret, but one that significantly drove up costs. He also pointed to unnecessary spends, like a lavish China-set table tennis sequence that never even made the final cut. The film eventually grossed Rs.133.5 crore worldwide, opening at a modest Rs.11 crore in India - a stark contrast to Dangal's Rs.385 crore domestic haul and Rs.2,000 crore globally. HTC...
