'Dharamji was a He-man in every sense'

e will all miss that handsome man, that superb human being and great actor. Despite being the superstar he was, and always will be, Dharamji remained deeply grounded. He was there for everyone on set: spot boys, light men, technicians. If someone was in financial trouble, he quietly helped. He greeted every person on the unit with the same warmth, no matter their role.
Naya Zamana (1971) was the first film I did with him. I couldn't sleep the night before, he was so ethereally good-looking. I would stay on set even when I wasn't required, just watching him. admiring not only his looks but his humility. He was a He-Man in every sense.
He would call out, "Aruna, chalo, let's eat". During breaks, he made sure no one felt bored: "Chalo, patte nikalo," he'd say, ready for a game of cards. He lost most of the time but never stopped playing. If I won, he would feel bad - because he had to pay me (laughs). Then, with that unmistakable smile, he'd say, "Tu bahut pyaari hai, Aruna," and place his hand gently on my head to bless me: "Khush raho."
