Zila parishad polls by Dec 5: Punjab to HC
	
		
				Chandigarh, Oct. 28 -- The Punjab government on Monday informed the Punjab and Haryana high court that elections to the state's zila parishads and panchayat samitis would be held by December 5. The state government counsel said the elections were to be held by October 5 but due to the flood situation in the state, the polls were deferred and now a notification has been issued for polls by December 5.
The elections are to be conducted for approximately 150 panchayat samitis and as many as 21 zila parishads. The information was given before the bench of chief justice Sheel Nagu and justice Sanjiv Berry during the resumed hearing of a public interest litigation filed in May by one Beant Kaur of Malerkotla. She alleged delay in holding of polls by the state authorities. In view of the statement made, the court has deferred the hearing until November 26....
