World Liver Day: Can supplements fix fatty liver? Experts weigh in

atty liver disease is fast becoming one of the most common lifestyle disorders globally, driven largely by rising obesity and high blood sugar levels. A recent study published in The Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology estimates that by 2050, nearly 1.8 billion people could be affected.
On World Liver Day, observed annually on April 19, experts are using the moment to highlight the growing burden of liver diseases and the need for early lifestyle intervention.
In India, the numbers are already worrying. Studies suggest that between 9% and 32% of people may have non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), while government data indicates that nearly one in three Indians could be living with some degree of fatty liver. Left unchecked, it can lead to serious complications, including diabetes, and liver damage and, in severe cases, the need for a transplant.
With growing awareness, many people are turning to over-the-counter supplements. While they can support liver health, doctors caution that they are not a cure.
"Supplements alone cannot reverse fatty liver," says Dr Deepak Lahoti. "The most effective way is to lose 5-10% of body weight through diet and regular exercise. A Mediterranean-style diet, combined with at least 150 minutes of physical activity a week, makes the biggest difference." That said, some supplements may help reduce inflammation and fat build-up in the liver.

Doctors advise using such supplements cautiously and only after consulting a professional. "They can support recovery, but cannot replace lifestyle changes," Mandot adds.
