India, May 6 -- World Asthma Day is observed on May 6 every year. This year's theme, Make Inhaled Treatments Accessible for ALL, is spotlighting the need for equitable access to essential asthma medications worldwide. In India, where asthma affects over 35 million individuals, this underscores a pressing public health challenge. People develop symptoms when they are genetically predisposed or are exposed to air borne environmental risk factors such as organic and inorganic dusts, vehicle smoke, harvesting-induced air pollutants, etc. These agents enter the lungs and cause inflammation or swelling, leading to narrowed and congested airways, leading to breathlessness, wheezing, cough and chest tightness. Inhaled treatments such as inhalers and nebulisers are the cornerstone of asthma management, effectively controlling inflammation and preventing attacks. However, studies show 90% asthma patients in India, underutilise inhalers owing to factors such as cost, lack of awareness and social stigma. This underuse contributes to poorly controlled asthma and preventable hospitalisations. Inhaled treatments count as one of the success stories of modern medicine, on par with insulin and antibiotics.
