Woman killed by brother for marrying against family's wishes
Rohtak, Nov. 21 -- A 23-year-old woman was allegedly shot dead by her brother and three others at Rohtak's Kahni village on Wednesday night, police said on Thursday. The woman's brother-in-law Sahil Kumar also sustained bullet injuries. He is undergoing treatment at PGIMS, Rohtak.
The deceased has been identified as Sapna. According to police, the woman eloped with co-villager Suraj, an auto driver, three years ago, and they got married. The couple started living in Rohtak.
An officer privy to the matter said that the couple shifted back to the village six months after their marriage and Sapna's family could not digest the fact that they are living in the same village and some people used to taunt them for the marriage.
Rohtak DSP (headquarters) Ravi Khundia said that the incident took place around 9.45 pm on Wednesday night when the woman's brother Sanju, his friend Rahul and two others reached outside her in-laws house and fired shots at her when she was closing the main door of the house. Police said the attackers also fired shots at her brother-in-law Sahil when he was rescuing her. "The woman succumbed to bullet injuries and her brother-in-law is undergoing treatment at PGIMS. The woman's husband was at the village bus stand when the incident took place. He had returned from Rohtak after ferrying commuters in his auto" he added.
The DSP said that the murder was executed as the woman's family were against the marriage. He added that the couple had taken police security after getting married and started living in Rohtak city.
"As the situation turned normal after a few months of their marriage, the couple returned back to their village. Both of them belonged to the same village and both hails from scheduled castes. We have formed four teams to arrest the accused. An FIR under various charges, including murder and Arms Act has been lodged against the accused," DSP added.
Sapna's mother-in-law Nirmala Devi said that Sapna's family threatened them of dire consequences following their court marriage. She further said that Sapna and Suraj were studying in the same school and both the families were aware about their relationship. "We had mutually decided not to solemnise marriage but Sapna remained adamant. The duo tied the knot and her family had threatened to kill our family," she added....
