Why fertility counselling should be mandatory in cancer treatment plans
India, Aug. 3 -- Cancer treatments like chemotherapy, radiation, or surgery can severely impact fertility by damaging ovaries and uterus. Many patients are unaware of these risks until it's too late. Goal of fertility counselling is to make individuals aware and give them critical information about how cancer treatment may affect their reproductive future. For young adults and children especially, fertility preservation options - such as egg or sperm freezing - can be a hope for future fertility.
Preserving fertility should be an informed decision-making procedure. It can prevent long-term regret and promotes holistic care that improves both survival and quality of life. It also addresses emotional and psychological well-being, helping patients cope with potential future infertility. By integrating fertility counselling into standard cancer treatment plans, healthcare providers demonstrate a commitment to comprehensive, patient-centered care. Fertility preservation is not a luxury - it's a crucial aspect of survivorship and should be treated as such.
