Whatever a woman does, she will be judged
India, Sept. 5 -- Rajshri Deshpande has earned critical acclaim for her work in projects like Trial By Fire (2023), Black Warrant and the most recent, Rangeen, making her name synonymous with quality and in depth cinema.
Ask if she feels the responsibility of the expectations that come with the appreciation and the actor responds, "I love doing this - creating characters, working on their backstories and understanding why they are doing what they are doing. The validation is amazing. And if there's criticism, I want to incorporate that in my work too because the learning never ends."

Because I know these stories aren't just today's stories," she explains.
Elaborating on her perspective, the 42-year-old insists, "Writers like the late Ismat Chughtai and Shyam Benegal have long explored such characters. These stories reflect how we view women in our own homes. For me, it felt like a normal story - just one we often choose to ignore or hide."
Rajshri asserts that playing such characters is meaningful to her: "There's grace in the character because she chooses herself and does not see it as a mistake. I wanted to play her without judgement, guilt, or labels."
Admitting that finding physical comfort outside marriage might be considered wrong, she urges viewers to consider the context. "There are a lot of factors - how society has shaped you since childhood, how your family and the people around you put you in a mould ki aisa hi hai. The thing is that, as women, we are not taught to stand up for ourselves. First, you're told to listen to your parents, then to your husband. If you try to stand up, there are a lot of repercussions."...
