Visibility drops to 20m as 'very dense fog' grips city
Chandigarh, Dec. 28 -- Visibility dropped to just 20 metres, the lowest so far this season, as very dense fog gripped the city on Saturday morning. Chances of dense fog will continue in the coming days as well as per the India Meteorological Department (IMD),
As per the IMD, visibility below 50 metres is classified as very dense fog. This is the first time this season that visibility has gone below 50 metres.
Speaking about this, IMD Chandigarh director Surender Paul said that this is expected as a fresh Western Disturbance (WD) is affecting the region and has stopped the dry North Westerly winds which had stopped the fog in the past few days.
The maximum temperature dropped from 20.7degC on Friday to 20.1degC, 0.3 degrees above normal. The minimum temperature dropped from 8.8degC on Friday to 6.9degC on Saturday, 0.2 degrees above normal.
The city, at night, was colder than Shimla where the minimum temperature was 7.5degC and Dharamshala at 7.4degC .
Over the next three days, the maximum temperature will remain between 18degC and 19degC while the minimum temperature will remain around 7degC.
Meanwhile, the air quality index (AQI) of the city continued to remain poor on Saturday. As per the daily bulletin released by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the AQI of the city was at 242, which falls in the poor category. Panchkula continued to remain more polluted than Chandigarh, as its AQI was 365 on Saturday. Delhi however, was more polluted than Panchkula after a two-day spell, with AQI at 385.
Nine flights were cancelled due to visibility issues on Saturday. Of the total, six were departures.
These included IndiGo flight 6E867 to Hyderabad, 6E2315 to Delhi, 6E7743 to Jaipur, 6E6395 to Ahmedabad, 6E6470 to Hyderabad and Air India flight AI472 to Mumbai.
Three arrival flights were also cancelled.
These flights were scheduled to arrive from Delhi, Hyderabad and Pune. The cancellations affected passengers connecting to onward destinations, resulting in rescheduling requests.
Train operations were also affected.
Among those delayed was the the Amb-Andaura-New Delhi Vande Bharat Express which arrived in Chandigarh 56 minutes behind schedule. Several long distance trains also saw delays ranging from one to two hours....
