Jalandhar, June 18 -- The Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) has arrested sacked naib tehlisdar Varinderpal Singh Dhoot in an disproportionate assets case. Dhoot, a resident of Dhoot Kalan village in Hoshiarpur district, has reportedly amassed 211.54% more assets than his known sources of income. An official spokesperson of the bureau said the probe covered the period from January 1, 2009, to December 31, 2018. Investigations revealed that Dhoot's total income from known sources during this period was Rs.3,58,97,111. However, his total expenditure and assets acquired amounted to Rs.11,18,34,544 - Rs.7,59,37,432.63 (211.54%) more than his lawful income, said the spokesperson. The VB added that this substantial disparity established that Dhoot, while serving as a public servant, acquired immovable and moveable assets and spent funds far exceeding his legitimate earnings, thereby violating anti-corruption laws. A case under the Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered at VB police station, Jalandhar range, and the accused has been arrested. "The accused would be produced in a court on Wednesday and further investigation into this case is under progress," the bureau added. On February 26, 2025, the Punjab government had sacked Dhoot for allegedly sanctioning the mutation of shamlat land at Seonk village in Kharar in favour of private individuals in 2016. In November 2020, the VB had booked 11 people, including Dhoot, kanungo Raghubir Singh, patwari Iqbal Singh, nambardar Gurnam Singh and property dealer Sham Lal and others, for usurping the common village land at Seonk village. Prime accused Dhoot and Sham Lal were arrested in November 2022. The case dates back to 2017 when Dhoot was posted as the naib tehsildar in Majri. According to the vigilance FIR, the accused prepared forged land documents and got the village common land registered in the name of people known to them in lieu of high amounts of money. Later, the plots were sold at high rates. The action pertaining to Dhoot's dismissal came following a detailed inquiry by former additional district and sessions judge BR Bansal that found Dhoot guilty of violating the Punjab Village Common Lands Act, 1961. The detailed inquiry revealed that Dhoot, while posted as naib tehsildar in Majri, SAS Nagar, had sanctioned mutation on September 28, 2016, transferring ownership of 10,365 kanals and 19 marlas of shamlat land in Seonk village in tehsil Kharar, to private individuals. The inquiry revealed that Dhoot went ahead with mutation despite clear-cut instructions issued by the revenue department and Supreme Court, which prohibits the transfer or mutation of shamlat land to private parties....
