Panchkula, Sept. 7 -- The Cybercrime police have arrested one person in connection with a sophisticated cyber fraud case where a Zirakpur-based cloth merchant was duped of Rs.1.5 crore last year. The accused, identified as Rajesh Kumar from the Etah district of Uttar Pradesh, was apprehended on September 4. The case began with a complaint filed by 43-year-old Somesh Mittal, a resident of Sector 21, Panchkula, on October 10, 2024. According to Mittal, he was lured into a fraudulent online trading scheme throughTelegram app in November 2023 with promises of high returns. He was instructed to download and install a fraudulent application. Over several transactions conducted between November 2023 and March 2024, he was defrauded of approximately Rs.1.5 crore. His attempts to contact the fraudster were unsuccessful as the number was switchedoff. Police officials stated that Rajesh Kumar had been actively evading arrest for nearly a year, but persistent efforts and raids ultimately led to his capture. He was produced in court and has been taken on a five-day police remand. Initial interrogations have uncovered the involvement of other individuals in the scam.
