Panchkula, Jan. 13 -- A special POCSO court in Panchkula sentenced an Uttar Pradesh man to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) on Thursday for sexually assaulting a seven-year-old girl in 2021. The court also imposed a fine of Rs.50,000 on him. The convict, a neighbour of the victim at the time, was held guilty under Section 6 (aggravated penetrative sexual assault) of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. He was below 20 years of age when the crime was committed. In April 2021, the victim's mother had approached the police, stating that her daughter had been sexually assaulted when she and her husband were at work. She found out about the incident from her five-year-old son, who told her that the neighbour had sexually assaulted his sister and also beaten him up. Deputy district attorney (DDA) Sukhwinder Kaur informed that the testimony of the victim's younger brother was the cornerstone of the prosecution's case.
