India, Sept. 27 -- For many men, crossing the age of 50 brings a common health concern - benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), better known as an enlarged prostate. In India, however, the condition is often surrounded by myths and misconceptions. Most men experience some degree of prostate enlargement with age. Symptoms typically begin after 40. By 60, about one-third of men face moderate to severe problems, and by 80, nearly half are affected. While BPH is not life-threatening, its symptoms should never be ignored. Untreated enlargement can cause bladder blockages and even lead to kidney damage. According to experts, clearing up these misunderstandings can help men take charge of their health. "An enlarged prostate is not something to fear," says Dr Rajesh Sachar. "With timely check-ups and simple lifestyle changes, men can lead healthy, active lives without BPH getting in the way." Myth: Drinking lots of water can 'wash out' BPH.Fact: Excessive water intake does not cure BPH. In fact, it may worsen symptoms like frequent urination and could lead to other issues such as blood pressure fluctuations or low sodium levels. Moderation is key.Myth: BPH only affects men above 60 or 70.Fact: Symptoms of BPH can begin as early as the age of 40.Myth: BPH is harmless compared to diabetes or hypertension.Fact: While not immediately life-threatening, BPH symptoms - such as frequent night-time urination (nocturia) - can increase the risk of heart problems, strokes, and falls that may cause injuries.Myth: Bigger prostate means worse symptoms.Fact: Prostate size does not always determine symptom severity. Some men with a large prostate have mild symptoms, while others with smaller prostates may experience significant urinary problems. A full evaluation by a urologist is essential.Myth: Surgery is inevitable for BPH.Fact: Most men do not need surgery. International guidelines recommend lifestyle changes and safe, effective medications as the first line of treatment. Surgery is reserved for advanced or complicated cases.
