Lucknow, June 2 -- Uttar Pradesh MLA Abbas Ansari was disqualified from the state legislative assembly on Sunday, a day after a special MP/MLA court sentenced him to two years in prison in a 2022 hate speech case, officials aware of the matter said. According to a notification issued by the UP legislative assembly, Ansari -- the legislator from Mau constituency -- is disqualified from May 31, 2025. The Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP) leader was convicted on Saturday for threatening the Mau administration in the run up to the 2022 assembly elections. "In continuation of the decision dated July 10, 2013, passed by the Hon'ble Supreme Court in Writ Petition No. 490/2005 and Writ Petition No. 231/2005 mentioned in Para 5 of Election Commission of India's letter No. 509/Gen/2015/RCC, dated 13.10.2015, Shri Abbas Ansari shall be deemed to be disqualified from 31st May, 2025," the notification signed by Pradeep Dubey, principal secretary, Uttar Pradesh legislative assembly.
