Two cops held for taking bribe from drug peddler
Amritsar, Oct. 16 -- Two police officials from the Amritsar (Rural) police were arrested for allegedly accepting a bribe from a drug peddler in exchange for his release.
According to senior superintendent of police (SSP) Maninder Singh, the authorities acted on a credible tip-off regarding two police officials - ASI Narinder Singh and Head Constable Pargat Singh - who had detained Kulbir Singh, a resident of Darshan Avenue in Amritsar, on charges of possessing banned pharmaceutical drugs and capsules.
The arrest took place under the jurisdiction of Chatiwind police station, after which the accused was taken to Daburji police post for further processing.
Subsequently, both ASI Singh and constable Pargat had demanded a bribe of Rs.2.5 lakh from Kulbir's son, Shamsher Singh, in exchange for releasing his father and not pursuing any legal action.
They also allegedly retained the seized contraband for personal gain. Swift action was taken by the police, who immediately arrested the two officials along with the accused drug peddler Kulbir.
A case has been registered against them under Sections 7 and 8 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, and Sections 21, 22, and 59 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, at Chatiwind police station....
