Trump told Putin he got India, Pak to stop war: Russian official
New Delhi, June 6 -- US President Donald Trump reportedly told his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin the recent India-Pakistan clashes were halted with his "personal involvement", according to an aide to the Russian leader.
Trump and Putin spoke on phone late on Wednesday, and much of the 70-minute conversation focused on efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Yury Ushakov, the aide to the Russian president, told reporters.
Besides the Russia-Ukraine conflict and the US-Iran talks on the Iranian nuclear programme, Trump and Putin also discussed the India-Pakistan clashes last month, Ushakov was quoted as saying in a readout from the Kremlin.
"Additionally, the Middle East was discussed, as well as the armed conflict between India and Pakistan, which has been halted with the personal involvement of President Trump," Ushakov said. There was no immediate response to Ushakov's remarks from Indian officials. Trump was the first to announce on May 10 that India and Pakistan had decided to halt military actions, saying at the time that the two countries had agreed on a ceasefire after a "long night of talks mediated by the United States". An official statement from the US contended the ceasefire was brokered by Washington.
Despite India's rejection of these claims, Trump doubled down on his assertion that he played a direct role in negotiating a truce between India and Pakistan. He also claimed he had used trade to get the two sides to stop their military actions.
The external affairs ministry maintained May 10 understanding on halting firing and military actions was finalised during direct talks between the Directors General of Military Operations of India and Pakistan....
