India, Dec. 31 -- Approved by the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways in June 2016, the Tribune Chowk flyover was aimed to ease congestion at one of Chandigarh's busiest intersections. Its foundation stone was laid on March 3, 2019, by then UT administrator VP Singh Badnore. However, construction was stalled in November that year after the Punjab and Haryana high court (HC) imposed a stay on tree cutting along the proposed alignment. The stay was lifted in May last year, paving the way for revival of the project. Why it matters: Over 1.43 lakh vehicles cross Tribune Chowk daily, making it a major choke point. The flyover can help facilitate smoother traffic flow. Challenges: The cost escalation - from Rs.137 crore to over Rs.200 crore - and a fresh petition filed by residents before the HC,citing heritage and other issues, continue to stall the project. During a hearing on November 25, the HC observed that several global cities are now discouraging flyovers, further clouding the project's future.
