Jammu, May 15 -- A special train travelled from Delhi to Qazigund via Katra and carried Indian Army soldiers, railway and defence officials confirmed on Wednesday, marking the first full journey since the completion of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL). The train carrying between 800 and 1,000 soldiers started from Delhi on Tuesday and made a halt in Katra, said the officials cited above. At Katra, the soldiers boarded a different 14-coach train with a double engine that ferried them to Qazigund on Wednesday, the officials added. Qazigund is 73km from Srinagar and is the main rail head near the Jammu & Kashmir capital. "At 10.48 am today (Wednesday), a double-engine train with 14 coaches carrying about 800 to 1,000 soldiers crossed Sangaldan railway station in Ramban district. It was on its way to Srinagar," a railway official said, asking not to be named. After dropping off the soldiers at Srinagar, the train on its return journey crossed Sangaldan station at 5.11pm on Wednesday, the railway official added. This train journey was meant for "soldiers who were on leave and stuck at their locations due to cancellations of flights" to Jammu and Kashmir since May 7 after tension escalated between India and Pakistan, defence officials said. "The soldiers were on leave and were stuck due to suspension of flights from May 7. The decision was taken by the Centre to quickly and quietly facilitate their return to Srinagar for rejoining their duties," a defence official said, also declining to be named. Chief public relations officer of the railways, Himanshu Shekhar Upadhyaya, said "a special trial train was run between Katra and Qazigund and back." He refused to confirm if soldiers were being ferried on the train. However, a defence official confirmed the train carried soldiers. In January this year, a 22-bogie train travelled between Katra and Srinagar railway station as part of the final trial run on the line that aimed at connecting Kashmir Valley with the rest of the country via rail. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was to inaugurate the Katra-Srinagar section last month, but his trip got postponed due to bad weather.
