Top court judges' assets now out in public domain
Bengaluru, May 7 -- In an unprecedented move towards transparency and judicial accountability, the Supreme Court of India has, for the first time in history, published the asset declarations of its sitting judges on the court's official website.
As of Tuesday, May 6, the asset details of 21 of the 33 sitting judges of the Apex Court, including Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna and the next three CJIs-in-waiting, have been uploaded.
The remaining disclosures, according to the court, will be made public as and when the current statement of assets is received.
As per the details available on the website, CJI Khanna has Rs.55.75 lakh in fixed deposits and bank accounts and Rs.1.06 crore in Public Provident Fund.
The Chief Justice also owns a two-bedroom DDA flat in South Delhi and a four-bedroom flat in the Commonwealth Games Village in the national capital.
The flat in Commonwealth Games Village was purchased in 2019 using the proceeds from the sale of a house he inherited from his late father in 2004.
CJI Khanna holds a Public Provident Fund account with a balance of around Rs.1.06 crore and a General Provident Fund valued at approximately Rs.1.77 crore. He also maintains a Life Insurance Corporation money-back policy with an annual premium of Rs.29,625, and shares worth around Rs.14,000.

The declaration of assets of the judges follows a full court meeting convened on April 1, where all sitting judges of the Supreme Court unanimously resolved to disclose their assets publicly, shifting from the earlier practice of confidential submissions to the Chief Justice of India. The resolution, which applies to both current and future judges, came against the backdrop of growing concerns over opacity in the judiciary.
The disclosures, which include details of spouse and dependents where applicable, are expected to set a precedent.
High court judges are already required to submit similar declarations to their respective Chief Justices, though public disclosure remains rare.
And until the April 1 resolution, every judge of the Supreme Court was required to declare his or her assets and liabilities only to the CJI. Among the sitting judges of the Apex Court, who are yet to declare their assets and liabilities on the website are justices JK Maheshwari, BV Nagarathna, Dipankar Datta, Ahsanuddin Amanullah, Manoj Misra, Aravind Kumar, Prashant Kumar Mishra, SC Sharma, PB Varale, NK Singh, R Mahadevan, and Joymalya Bagchi....
