Dehradun, Sept. 18 -- Relief and rescue operations in rain-hit Dehradun continued for the second day, as 70 people were rescued from Karligarh village in Sahastradhara, which was completely cut off, officials said. Torrential rain on Tuesday claimed at least 15 lives in Uttarakhand with 13 of them in the state capital, Dehradun. The city bore the brunt of the latest wave of rain-related disasters -- triggering landslides, snapping vital road links, and causing widespread destruction across the region. The two other deaths in Uttarakhand, were reported from Nainital and Pithoragar.At least 16 people were also reported missing in Dehradun.The Dehradun-Mussoorie road, a key route connecting the hill town to the state capital, suffered severe damage as parts of it were washed away. Landslides blocked all major access routes from Mussoorie to Dehradun, including the Jharipani, Chunakhala, and Kimadi roads, further isolating the affected areas. Meanwhile, the rescue teams also continued their search for 16 missing people.District disaster management officer Rishabh Kumar said the search for the missing people continued on Wednesday. District magistrate Savin Bansal and senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh walked nearly 8 km to reach disaster-hit Karligad and Majhar villages in Sahastradhara, where they supervised the rescue of around 70 people trapped for over 24 hours. The stranded families were evacuated and relocated to safer places. "It is the duty of the district administration to minimise calamities and unforeseen events, and we are fully committed to this," Bansal told survivors at a relief camp. The administration announced a Rs.4,000 monthly rental allowance for three months for affected families wishing to relocate to a rented accommodation in safer places.After completing protocol duty at the airport to receive Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, the DM returned to the disaster control room to monitor operations. In coordination with the state government, the administration also airlifted 150 relief kits weighing 15-20 kg each to cut-off villages including Phulet, Sarkhet Chamrauli, Silla and Kyara, benefiting around 60 families. The kits contained rice, pulses, flour, sugar and salt. The airdrop was overseen by SDM Kumkum Joshi. In Mussoorie, the local administration led by SDM Rahul Anand began work at dawn to restore connectivity after roads were damaged at several points. A stretch near Shiv Mandir caved in, following which a bailey bridge was sanctioned. "The work of erecting the bridge is going at full speed. we expect traffic to be restored on the Mussoorie-Dehradun road by late evening under close monitoring," Anand said. According to the police, a total of 33 village roads are blocked in the district and efforts are to restore them. Operation of trains got halted for more than an hour on the Haridwar-Rishikesh-Dehradun railway lines as boulders fell on the track near Prachin Shri Daat Maha Kali temple in Bhimgoda, last night, railway officials said. According to the Government Railway Police (GRP) officials around 6.30pm on Tuesday, boulders fell on the railway track, after which trains coming from both sides were blocked, with five trains getting affected....
