Tikait demands free electricity for farmers, warns of protest
Haridwar, June 19 -- Bharatiya Kisan Union (Tikait) national spokesperson Rakesh Tikait on Wednesday issued a warning to the government, stating that farmers in Uttarakhand would be forced to launch an agitation if their demand for free electricity for agricultural use is not met.
Slamming the Modi government's 11-year tenure, Tikait called it anti-farmer and pro-corporate. "Since the BJP came to power at the Centre, the condition of farmers has only worsened. When they're not ready to raise crop prices, the least they can do is ease the burden of electricity bills." He warned that if the demand is not fulfilled soon, farmers will be forced to stage protests and even gherao Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami's office in Dehradun.
He also demanded the enactment of a law to guarantee Minimum Support Price (MSP), swift implementation of the Swaminathan Commission recommendations, timely and increased payment of sugarcane dues, electricity bill waivers for farmers, subsidies on farm tools and machinery, and a halt to large-scale acquisition of agricultural land in the name of development.
In response, BJP city MLA Madan Kaushik dismissed Tikait's allegations and said: "In the past 11 years, the BJP-led central government has significantly improved the living standards of farmers, boosted their income, and introduced numerous farmer-friendly schemes."...
