Siliguri, June 3 -- Three army personnel were killed and six people, including a lieutenant colonel of the Indian Army, went missing after a landslide triggered by days of incessant rain hit a military camp at Chhaten in North Sikkim late on Sunday evening, officials said on Monday. Heavy rainfall in the area triggered the landslide at 7pm on Sunday near Lachen town in Mangan district. "Among those missing are Lt Col Pritpal Sandhu, his wife Squadron Leader (retd) Arati B Sandhu and their daughter Amaria Sandhu, Subedar Dharamveer Singh, Sepoy Sainudheen PK and Sepoy Sunilal Muchahary," a senior police officer at Chungthang in North Sikkim said. Bodies of the deceased, identified as havildar Lakhwindar Singh, lance naik Munish Thakur and porter Abhishek Lakhada, have been recovered, while four other soldiers have been rescued with minor injuries, a defence official said. "Rescue teams are working round-the-clock under challenging conditions to locate the six missing personnel," he said. As rains continued to wreak havoc, hundreds of tourists were rescued from Lachung on Monday. Around 130 tourists, including four foreign tourists, are still stuck in Lachen. "On Monday, 1800 tourists were evacuated from Lachung. Evacuation of stranded tourists from Lachen is very difficult, as all bridges connecting Lachen have been washed away. We will try to evacuate them by air. However even the roads leading to the helipad are closed. We will try to repair the footpaths to take out the tourists up to the helipad," Mangan superintendent of police Sonam Detchu Bhutia said. According to the Public Works Department (PWD), 60 houses have been completely destroyed, 61 have been abandoned, and at least 84 roads across the state are blocked.
