Temporary respite from fog as visibility improves in city
Chandigarh, Dec. 22 -- Residents of Chandigarh found much-needed relief on Sunday as four days of dense fog finally cleared, leading to improved visibility and a rise in temperatures. Driven by a Western Disturbance (WD), the maximum temperature rose three notches to 21degC, up from 18.3degC on Saturday.
However, the IMD has warned that this relief will be short-lived, with dense fog expected to return by next week.
The improvement in visibility was significant, recorded at 800m on Sunday compared to the low of 200m on Saturday. While the sun broke through, some areas experienced light drizzles. IMD Chandigarh Director Surender Paul noted that moisture from these showers, coupled with snowfall in the hilly reaches of Himachal Pradesh, will likely trigger a fresh spell of dense fog around Christmas, subsequently lowering day temperatures again.
While daytime warmth increased, the minimum temperature fell from 11.3degC on Saturday to 8.8degC on Sunday-still 1.1 degrees above normal. Over the next three days, the maximum temperature is expected to stay between 20degC and 23degC, with minimums hovering between 10degC and 11degC. Concurrently, the city's AQI improved to 217 (poor) from Saturday's 302 (very poor).
Despite the clearing skies, flight operations at Chandigarh airport remained disrupted as 10 flights were cancelled. Cancelled departures included IndiGo flights to Mumbai (6E5261), Delhi (6E6742), Lucknow (6E146), Kolkata (6E627), and Hyderabad (6E867), along with Air India's AI1862 to Delhi. Arrival cancellations included IndiGo flights from Delhi (6E6741) and Pune (6E242), and Air India's AI1743 from Delhi....
