Tarn Taran law college student kills classmate, turns gun on himself
Amritsar, Feb. 10 -- A first-year law student shot and killed a woman classmate and then turned the gun on himself at a private college in Tarn Taran district on Monday morning, police said. The attacker, Prince Raj (20) of Mallian village, is critical.
The victim has been identified as Sandeep Kaur (20) of Naushehra Pannuan village. The incident took place in a classroom at Punjab College of Law in Usma village before lectures for the day were set to begin.
According to police, Prince entered the classroom and opened fire at Sandeep with a pistol from point-blank range. Raj then pulled the trigger on himself.
"The incident took place in the college falling in the jurisdiction of the Sarhali police station. The girl student died on the spot, while the shooter is in a critical condition", said Tarn Taran deputy superintendent of police Jagbir Singh who was at the spot with his team.
The CCTV footage of the incident, which HT has verified, showed Raj speaking with Kaur and another student in the classroom. Suddenly, he got up from his desk, turned back and shot Sandeep on her head. He then shot himself and fell on the floor as his classmates watched in horror before rushing out of the classroom.
Raj was immediately rushed to a hospital, said police, adding that the body of the woman has been sent for autopsy.
The accused remains under medical supervision, and is said to be in critical condition, the officials added.
While a motive is yet to be established, Tarn Taran senior superintendent of police (SSP) Surendra Lamba said the "friendship angle" appears to be the primary lead. "An FIR has been registered against the accused under murder charges," he added.
Victim's elder sister Sumanpreet Kaur said: "He once visited our house and proposed to my sister. She said no to him in polite words. She told him that she is only interested in studies".
"We have seized the mobile phones of both students and sent them for forensic examination to understand the nature of their relationship and the events leading up to the shooting," the SSP added.
Surender's mother Harjinder Kaur said her daughter was engaged. She raised questions on safety protocols at the college. "How did a student carry a pistol into a classroom? Does the college have any security system at all?" she said.
The SSP said that a probe was underway to ascertain from where Raj procured the pistol. "This is not a licensed pistol. We will be able to find details only after Raj regains consciousness," he said....
