Taming the bark: UT enforces strict stray dog feeding zones
India, Jan. 1 -- Following Supreme Court directives, the Chandigarh MC has implemented the pet and community dog bylaws 2025, introducing a massive crackdown on unregulated feeding. The city has earmarked 200 designated feeding spots to keep community dogs away from residential entrances. Feeding strays outside these zones now carries a steep Rs.10,000 fine, treated as a littering violation. In Mohali, the situation remains critical as the city continues to reel under an alarming surge in dog-bite incidents, with official data showing an average of 53 cases being reported every day in 2025. Panchkula is also yet to work on identifying feeding zones.
What it means: If SC orders on designating feeding zones are implemented by all three administrations, it will mark a major shift from casual compassion to regulated coexistence. By identifying pounds for ferocious dogs, the administrations would help in reducing dog-bite cases. Mohali and Panchkula also need to implement HC orders on awarding compensation in dog-bite cases along the lines of UT administration.
What next: All three cities are expected to finalise their designated feeding zones by early 2026, marking a pivotal year for urban animal management in the region. An early formal notification from Chandigarh MC on the identified feeding spots before final enforcement begins is crucial as it would force Panchkula and Mohali to follow suit....
