AMRITSAR, May 16 -- Amid growing calls for peace between India and Pakistan, Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj, the acting jathedar of Akal Takht, has appealed to both governments to reopen the Kartarpur Corridor without delay stating that its reopening would strengthen mutual ties and contribute to lasting peace. Addressing the issue on Thursday, Gargaj said that Sikhs around the world pray daily for unrestricted access to the gurdwaras, particularly Darbar Sahib, the final resting place of Guru Nanak in Pakistan's Narowal district. Keeping the corridor closed is unjustified and that reopening it would not only honour Sikh sentiments but also foster peace and strengthen ties between the two nations, Gargaj said. "Both India and Pakistan are in greater need of peace and mutual cooperation rather than conflict," he added. The acting jathedar also commended leaders, both national and international, for their efforts in de-escalating tensions and promoting peaceful dialogue. Amritsar Vikas Manch (AVM), an Amritsar-based NGO, on Thursday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighting the adverse impact of the shutdown of trade at the Attari-Wagah border. The NGO pointed out that the closure of the border has halted bilateral trade with Pakistan, Afghanistan and other Asian nations, leaving thousands dependent on the border trade-such as porters, laborers, truck drivers and dhaba owners-without employment. The NGO has urged the Centre to provide financial assistance to those affected directly depositing funds into their bank accounts on a monthly basis until normal trade resumes, helping them to cope with the crisis....
