India, Sept. 29 -- Sudden cardiac death (SCD) remains one of the most-alarming medical emergencies worldwide. Defined as an unexpected death due to loss of heart function, usually within one hour of symptom onset, it often occurs in individuals who may not even be aware that they have a heart condition. The most common cause of SCD is ventricular arrhythmia (abnormally fast and chaotic heart rhythm) triggered by underlying heart disease. In India, coronary artery disease, heart failure, and cardiomyopathies are the leading culprits. Lifestyle-related risk factors like diabetes, hypertension, smoking, obesity, and stress further contribute to vulnerability. While SCD often strikes without warning, certain symptoms can be red flags: Every minute counts in SCD. Immediate recognition, quick access to emergency services, and community CPR can make the difference between life and death. At the same time, preventive care, lifestyle changes, and timely intervention for high-risk patients can significantly reduce the burden of sudden cardiac deaths in India.
