India, May 31 -- Tobacco addiction is a global health concern, one that has been linked to cancers, chronic respiratory and heart diseases. But in a spot of good news, the World Health Organization (WHO) has projected that this year, India is on track to achieve a 30% relative reduction in tobacco consumption as compared to 2010. On World No-Tobacco Day today experts shed light on how you can bid adieu to smoking. Dr Aravind Badiger, technical director of BDR Pharmaceuticals, says, "It's crucial to reinforce that quitting is not only possible, but is also the single best decision you can make." He adds, "Many experience remarkable recoveries simply by quitting cigarettes. However, it requires a clear plan, support and sometimes, medical intervention." Dr Badiger suggests beginning with a Lung Function Test: "Seeing the effect smoking has on one's lungs tends to be an eye-opener." If you're taking the medical route, he suggests Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT). "By giving your body regulated amounts of nicotine without tobacco smoke can alleviate withdrawal symptoms. When combined with behavioural therapy, NRT can double your chances of quitting successfully," Dr Badiger shares. Inputs by Dr Rakesh Pandit, head of Internal Medicine, Aakash Healthcare, Delhi...
