Striped Tiger is UT's state butterfly
Chandigarh, Jan. 20 -- The striped tiger butterfly was declared the state butterfly of Chandigarh during a meeting of the state board of wildlife, chaired by UT administrator Gulab Chand Kataria, on Monday.
The board directed the department of forest and wildlife to launch wide publicity and public awareness campaigns, especially at railway stations, tourist destinations, and other important public places, to educate people about the new state symbol.
During the meeting, Kataria also reviewed the status of actions taken during earlier meetings and the progress on the eco-sensitive zone around Sukhna wildlife sanctuary.
He advised that meetings of the board be conducted every six months.
SS Grewal, member of the board, appreciated the Sukhomajri Project and highlighted the importance of the Sukhna Lake watershed,underlining the forest department's efforts in soil andmoisture conservation, silt retention, and ensuring regular water inflow into the lake.
Kataria further directed the department to explore thesetting up of a wildlife learning centre, such as a biological park or enclosure, for thepublic and students, in accordance with rules, regulations, and statutory provisions....
