Ludhiana, Aug. 15 -- : Six Indian nationals, including four from Punjab and two from Himachal Pradesh, arrived safely at IGI Airport, New Delhi, on Thursday after being stranded in Iraq in "distressing" conditions.
Their return was made possible through the efforts of Punjab cabinet minister for industry and commerce, investment promotion and NRI affairs Sanjeev Arora.
According to a press release issued by Arora, the returnees are Sorav of Tarn Taran, Gurpreet Singh from Chaunta village in Ludhiana, Sanjeev Kumar and Abhilash Kumar from Sherpur Bahtian village in Hoshiarpur and Tara Chand and Charanjeet Swami from Mandi district, Himachal Pradesh.
The individuals had travelled to Iraq for employment but had not been paid for the past four months and were facing mistreatment.
Concerned for their safety, they had reached out seeking immediate assistance, he said.
Arora said he took up the matter with Union minister for external affairs S Jaishankar and sent multiple emails to the Iraq embassy, urging swift repatriation.
"The safety and dignity of every Indian, no matter where they are in the world, is our foremost priority," he said.
This is the second such rescue in recent days. Six days ago, four other Punjabis-Gurpreet Singh, Surjeet Singh, Amarjit Singh, and Avtar Singh-were brought back from Iraq under similar circumstances.htc...
